COSMO Rock the Vote

This project started out by encouraging readers to register to vote during the final voter registration weekend. A recent study showed that voting amongst young people aged 21 – 29, was the lowest of all age demographics in South Africa.

With elections set to take place in May 2019, the COSMO team took up the challenge to encourage readers and followers to stand up and vote in the upcoming election.

Readers and followers were encouraged to buy a T-shirt from T-Shirts For Change, and send us a selfie of themselves wearing the T-shirt at their local voting station using #COSMORockTheVote! A portion of the proceeds from T-shirt sales went to the Not Yet Uhuru collective.

We also launched a survey to find out our readers’ political views, which ensured that the audience felt heard. Findings were used in a report published in COSMO April issue, online and used in the manifesto in collaboration with Soul City Institute’s Not Yet Uhuru, an organization that focuses on women empowerment through championing feminist policy.

The COSMO Rock the Vote campaign reached a total of 1 647 117 people on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter combined.

Many COSMO followers joined the conversation on Instagram by wearing their COSMO voting tees in support of the cause, including Bonang, who filmed a conversation with President Ramaphosa while wearing her Cosmo Rock the Vote tee.
